I am taking a little break this week from politics and sports to focus on something more relaxed and fun. Entertainment. The Times-Picayune offers a variety of subcategories in this section. Music, dining, movies, festivals, TV are just a few of the topics considered entertainment. The media outlet goes beyond celebrity gossip stories to provide their readers with informative, but fun stories.
The homepage for entertainment is quite bland. It is not something you would expect from this section. Only two stories have pictures accompanying them, the others are presented in a list.
After analyzing the entertainment page as a whole, I went section by section to see what they had to offer. These individual categories were much more pleasing. Every story had some aspect of multimedia presented with it, whether that be pictures or video. Their food and drink sections even has an area where readers can search for recipes on the site. On the left sidebar of these pages there was even a Twitter feed of tweets from Food Editor Judy Walker.
I was not initially pleased with the entertainment section of the website. The layout was text heavy. There was nothing on the page that caught my attention and drew me in right away. I credit the media outlet for the quality of stories they are publishing under each category. However, I think they should spend time redesigning the layout. The Times-Picayune could do a lot with the section to make the entertainment section a staple of their website if some changes were made.
