CBS News had updated its website everyday this week with news surrounding Holy Week.
On Wednesday, the media outlet compiled a photo gallery of haunting images during Holy Week in Spain. These images were captivating. They showed different brotherhoods dressed in hooded robes, eerily similar to the Ku Klux Klan. The different elements of each photograph - quality of light, emotion, mood, perspective, etc. - produce compelling images that leaves the reader browsing through the gallery. CBS also created a photo gallery with images from Good Friday rituals around the world. Again, the different elements created a captivating slideshow. None of the images were taken by CBS staff members, as most came from the Associated Press or Getty Images. However, CBS' ability to produce interesting, engaging, and educational pieces of journalism made me come back everyday during Holy Week.
CBS provided articles related to Holy Week as well. The first was a video, article and picture package covering the ritual Pope Francis has celebrated in washing young detainees feet. It was something he began as Archbishop and continues to do as Pope. The article and pictures were courtesy of the Associated Press and Getty Image. CBS did, however, provide a clip showing the Pope washing their feet. Come Saturday, CBS had covered the Pope's first Easter Vigil mass. It was another Associated Press story, but the media outlet did provide its own video from a CBS This Morning segment summarizing his first Holy Week.
Easter Sunday brought new content to the CBS homepage. There was an article covering Pope Francis and his plea for world peace. The article also described the scene at his first Easter mass as Pope. Two videos from CBS Sunday Morning were also embedded on CBS News. The first looked at who Mary was. CBS not only provided the video, but a transcript underneath of what was said. The second video profiled Peter Chin, a Korean-American pastor at Peace Fellowship, which is located in a predominately African-American neighborhood. It included reaction from people in the parish before discussing his background and success at the church. Both of these videos were very compelling. They did not specifically mention Easter Sunday, but were a nice addition to CBS' coverage of religion.
While looking at the coverage of Holy Week on CBS I came across a special page, Change at the Vatican. It was another one of the in-depth sections CBS provides for large events. Content covered everything from Benedict XVI to the conclave process that presented the Catholic Church with Pope Francis. CBS had articles, photo galleries and videos once again. It was another well put together section that provided readers with hours of endless content - some of which I would never have thought to cover.
CBS does not limit its religion cover to just the Catholic Church. The media outlet has also covered news relating to Muslim and Jewish events around the world, to name a few. This weekend, CBS ran a story entitled "'Jew in the Box' exhibit raises interest, ire in Germany". It was another Associated Press article that discussed how the Jewish Museum in Berlin has a Jewish person sit inside a glass box to answer any questions visitors have about Jews or their life. It is a very touchy subject in Germany, even almost 70 years after the Holocaust. The article was very interesting to read and the headline alone caught my attention. Even though it was not written by them, I was thankful CBS included this on their site.
A simple search of the word religion of CBS News will provide readers with over 500 results. Not all of them are relevant, but the majority of articles, pictures and videos cover something related to religion. CBS does cover all religions, especially if major events are occurring that are related to it.
