On Wednesday in #loweclass #digital we were delighted to welcome a guest who talked with us about our upcoming project for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Meg Kissinger is an investigative reporter for the media outlet. Her main focus is improving the mental illness system throughout Milwaukee. Kissinger did not begin her career focusing on this issue. Instead, she wrote obituaries and gossip columns until three of her family members struggled with mental illness.
Kissinger has had a first hand encounter with mental illness. Two of her siblings, a brother and sister, both committed suicide at a young age because of their illness. Her older brother Jake is suffering from depression and lives in a mental illness group home outside of Chicago. I was inspired by the all of the stories Kissinger shared about her experiences. She was open about her personal life, but also told us of people she met while investigating.
Her recent series Imminent Danger chronicles a variety of mental illness cases around the nation. It contains stories from a husband whose wife was a victim at the Virginia Tech shooting, to a woman who started a support line for people suffering from mental illness.
I am really excited to work on this project for Kissinger and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Her positive energy and passion for the subject inspire me to become a great journalist. Kissinger is truly an inspiration and mentor that many can look up to.
